Cause and Effect

Our lived experiences are filled with cause and effect. One action causes another. This is one of the rules of existence that we come to understand through our lived experience and those with the ability to discern what cause brings about a particular effect are able to use that knowledge in very powerful ways to bring about their desires.

The attempt to bring about a particular desire is what worship is about. Worship is the ritual act of pleasing a deity whom the worshipper believes has a particular power to grant their desires. The purpose of worship is to show that deity that you honor and respect it and wish to be in its good graces.  The goal of worship is to please the deity so that in turn the deity will act favorably towards you.  These are straightforward transactions that humans have been engaged in for a long time.  They like most of human behavior have developed through a process of trial and error.  Humans have discovered that if they act in a particular way they will receive a particular result.  This is the information that has been passed down through the generations as tradition.

The same type of inquiry is now being performed by scientists with greater success. They have added the element of experimentation.  Rather than merely assuming that a particular result is caused by the preceding actions through experimentation they are able to identify the true cause of a particular effect.

The scientific method has revealed causes that contradict long-held traditional views.  For example, this type of inquiry helped to explain the movement of celestial bodies which should have eliminated old superstitions like Astrology, which used celestial movements to predict future events. The most unnerving of people of faith are the discoveries that contradict deeply held religious beliefs. So unnerving that people would rather reject the new information rather than alter their way of thinking to one that would make living a more successful endeavor.

There are defined rules to existence. Rules that define the result of every action. Over the centuries humans have discovered many of these rules, the ancients call them the will of God. Those who understand them and make their actions consistent with them can bring about their desires. It is not alchemy, it’s more like chemistry. It’s the broader application of Newton’s Third Law of Motion. Every action in nature has an equal and opposite reaction. As knowledge increases so do our ability to fine-tune the rules and in some cases remove rules that we find no longer apply. It has been demonstrated that those who embrace new knowledge and act upon it are able to use that information to make their lives better and those who reject knowledge for tradition continue to suffer in life from their only consolation being their faith in the old.

Part 3: Redefining my Relationship with God. - The Story of my Deconversion, Deprogramming, Reconversion and Awakening -

How  would you describe the relationship you have with God? Is God your benevolent father, a cosmic sovereign, or your eternal judge? Is God distant and unknowable or intimate and personal to you? If you are like me the question can not be answered in a simple sentence.   The relationship isn’t complicated but it is difficult to explain. Nevertheless I will try and do so in this part 3 of my blog series on my de-conversion, deprogramming, reconversion and awakening.      For the majority of my life I had a very particular view of how God, in the Christian context, relates to humanity.   What I mean by this is that I had a very particular notion of God’s personality and attributes. I personified God as a man who created everything and had a very particular way that he desired things to be done. He communicated his will to His creation through his prophets after sin put a wedge between God and humanity. The story goes that a wedge was created wh...

The Character Development Cycle

Stages of Character Development A 6 stage cycle for character development is revealed when the parable of the sower is combined with other farming or planting metaphors and similes found in the Bible that are used to explain spiritual development. This blog post briefly summarizes the process by breaking down the combined metaphors and similes into 3 components: the vehicle in Figure 1 is the biological life cycle of a plant,  the tenor or topic in Figure 2 are corresponding Biblical symbols  and Figure 3 the practical application.   Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Stage 1: Soil Biological: Soil provides anchorage for plant roots and holds water and nutrients essential for plant growth. Soil condition is important to the growth of healthy plants, therefore cultivators make sure that the soil is suitable before sowing seeds. Biblical: Soil represents the heart. In the parable of the sower, found in Matthew 13, four types of soil conditions are described: roadside, thorny,...

Life’s Greatest Pursuit

Be Rich in Good Works What are your goals for the new year? Are you focused on obtaining more things or do you want to obtain more lasting wealth? I encourage you to consider a personal goal that is of more value than material wealth. Focus on obtaining the kind of wealth that will provide you with a firm foundation for your future. Wealth that no one can take away from you. Try to be rich in good deeds. Goodwill 1 Timothy 6:18, 19 suggests that performing good works is how people add to their spiritual treasury. Good acts create positive equity, a reserve that sustains them in the future. Through good acts, a person can grab hold of life. This is how they can make life more abundant. By performing good acts a person intentionally earns an asset referred to in accounting as goodwill. Goodwill is your established reputation. It's yours and no one or thing can arbitrarily destroy it. It does not succumb to market pressures. You alone decide when and where to use this reserve. Inv...
